READING - UNIT 1
In Unit 1 - Module B of Ready Gen, your child will be engaged in reading complex texts. Our anchor text for this module is "Skeletons." Your child will also be reading the supporting text, "Movers and Shapers" Readers will learn to use information presented in different ways and from different sources to demonstrate understanding of a topic. Readers will be able to compare, gather and synthesize ideas from multiple sources in informational texts. Readers will also be able to summarize ideas by using both text and supporting visuals for clues.
HOMEWORK
Students have nightly reading homework. Your child should be logging onto Raz-Kids for at least 20 minutes with the teacher username "ps181orangeteam" and choosing their name. Their password is their homeroom class, either "401" or "402". It also includes independent reading in a just-right book. It will also include a reading response to be written in their purple, ELA homework notebook. Students will also have vocabulary homework as they practice the words they will be learning in the texts we read.
ASSESSMENTS
Students will be assessed individually for their reading level. Please ask your child about their just-right level. To help prepare your child, practice retelling stories and discuss character's feelings and motivations and changes in the story.
Students will also be taking bi-weekly vocabulary tests on the words listed. Please help your child by making flashcards.

ESSAY
WRITING
Students are currently learning to write essays. As they continue their journey as 4th grade authors, they will be learning skills to make their writing an experience for the reader. Our goal will be to craft essays with structure and voice. It is important for students to learn to write tightly structured essays and to do this easily, on the run. It is also important for those essays to not read like they are cookie cutter pre-fabricated pieces. Students will write both personal and persuasive essays. Writers will learn to become more at home with academic language, transitions, the structures of claims, reasons and supports. They will engage in the writing process of drafting, revising, editing and finally publishing. Throughout the process writers will learn to organize their writing. They will develop their writing style as we practice creating hooks, adding in dialogue and details that create emotions in the readers. Writers will learn to be descriptive as they create a picture in the mind of the reader. Our published authors must of course be celebrated at the end of the unit at a grand celebration.
KEEP AN EYE OUT FOR YOUR INVITATION!

ASSESSMENTS
In preparation for our ELA assessments students are practicing short response answers. They are using the IRAFFET strategy. I - Introduction, R - restate the question, A - answer the question, F - fact or detail from the text, F - a second fact or detail from the text, E - explain the facts, T - tie it all together.
For extended responses students will be learning to write a fully constructed essay including and introduction, several paragraphs for the body and a conclusion.

Science
4th Grade Science State Exam - June 1st

VISION AND LIGHT
UNIT 2 - During Unit 2 our 4th grade scientists will be learning about how light travels, the structures in our eye that allow us to see, and how they respond to varying levels of light. Your child will be working as a scientist helping a rain forest Conservation group in the Philippines. There is an issue with the Tokay Gecko population and your child's research will help to understand and fix the problem. Students investigate the questions "What are animals’ sensory structures and how do they help animals survive?" and "What are the different structures within the eye and how do they help an animal see?" Please ask your child about their in class research and the things they are learning.
Social Studies
Colonial and Revolutionary Periods
Essential Question: What motivates people to explore and colonize other lands?

Students will be able to describe colonial life in New York. They will also learn about the differences in the way of life under Dutch rule and British rule. Students will understand the causes and effects that led up to the American Revolution. This unit also focuses on the birth of democracy, voting and the formation of the United States Constitution. As an enrichment opportunity some students will participate in a grade trip to "Kids for President" at Queens College on November 26th. Please look out for your child's permission slip.
